One of the recurring questions we receive from visitors planning a trip on the Ilfracombe Princess is whether dogs are welcome. The answer is yes, and we have welcomed hundreds of canine passengers over the years alongside their owners. This is what you need to know before you book.
Dogs on the Lower Deck
Dogs travel on the lower deck of the Ilfracombe Princess, which is enclosed and comfortable. Owners sit with their dogs on the lower deck. The upper deck, which is open to the elements, is reserved for human passengers. The lower deck has excellent windows for viewing the coast and offers a calm, sheltered environment that most dogs settle into well once the initial novelty of being on a moving vessel passes.
Will My Dog Be Okay on a Boat?
Most dogs adapt to a boat trip better than their owners expect. The gentle motion of a large vessel like the Princess is significantly less dramatic than a small dinghy or RIB, and the enclosed lower deck provides a stable, familiar-feeling space.
If your dog is anxious in new environments or has not been on a boat before, a calm summer crossing on a sheltered coastal route is a gentle introduction. Bring a familiar blanket or toy to help them settle, keep them on the lead, and give them time to find their comfortable position. Most dogs are relaxed within the first fifteen minutes.
We would advise against bringing dogs who are highly reactive to other dogs, as the lower deck is a shared space, or dogs with severe motion sickness. If you are uncertain, contact us before booking and we will give you an honest assessment.
What Should I Bring for My Dog?
- Fresh water: dogs should have access to water throughout. Bring a portable bowl.
- Lead: dogs must be kept on the lead at all times on board.
- Familiar items: a blanket or toy helps anxious dogs settle.
- Seasickness prevention: if your dog is prone to motion sickness, speak to your vet before the trip.
- Poo bags: standard for any outing.
Dogs and Wildlife
During seal sightings, dogs on the lower deck will often detect the animals before their owners do, and the reaction of a dog spotting seals through a window is reliably entertaining. Keeping dogs calm and quiet during close wildlife encounters is appreciated for the benefit of other passengers.
A Note on Other Passengers
The Princess carries a mixed passenger group. If your dog is particularly boisterous or unpredictable around strangers, a quieter sailing is a better choice than a busy summer weekend afternoon. Our crew are experienced with dog passengers and will let you know if any issue arises.
